International Journal of Theological and Islamic Studies

International Journal of Theological and Islamic Studies - JIST (Marmara Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi - MÜİFD) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, and multidisciplinary academic journal issued twice a year. It is one of the oldest and uninterruptedly published academic journals (since 1963) and one of the most respected ones in the fields of theological and Islamic studies in Turkey. The JIST is dedicated to bringing to the attention of the international scholarly community well-written original research articles by qualified specialists in theological and Islamic studies. It aims at providing a forum to share and discuss new academic findings and supporting the development of fresh scholarly discussions, examinations, reinterpretations, and approaches.

As a journal with the mission of contributing to high-quality academic studies, spreading academic knowledge and making it accessible to all parts of the society, the JIST maintains an open-access policy. All materials published in the journal are accessible, free of charge, via the website of the journal. All materials can be downloaded without membership or payment. No fee is expected from authors for any reason.

Issued by the Faculty of Theology of Marmara University, the JIST publishes research articles, research notes, book and conference reviews, and obituary notes related to any subdiscipline of theological and Islamic studies. These include historical studies and modern interpretations of Qur’anic and hadith studies, fiqh, kalam, Sufism, Islamic history, Islamic intellectual tradition as well as theological, religious, and philosophical studies. The journal considers articles in Turkish, English, and Arabic, and occasionally publishes scholarly contributions in Persian, German, and French.

• International Journal of Theological and Islamic Studies - JIST (Marmara Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi) is a double-blind peer-reviewed, and open access academic journal published twice a year (June and December) in the fields of theological and Islamic Studies.
• JIST publishes academic contributions under the following categories: research articles, research notes, book reviews, reviews of conferences and meetings, interviews, and obituary notes.
• Authors are expected to read the JIST’s Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement beforehand.
• As a rule, JIST does not publish more than one research article of the same author in a single issue. It is, however, possible to publish more than one piece by the same author in different categories depending on the Editorial Board's decision.
• The publication rights of the articles to be published belong to the JIST. For this reason, in the initial submission of the manuscripts, regardless of the category of the manuscript, Copyright Transfer Agreement must be filled out duly and uploaded to the system together with the manuscript. Unfortunately, the JIST cannot make any payments to the authors if the articles are published.
• The following template should be followed for manuscripts to be submitted to the journal. You can also submit your articles using the Author Information Page and Article Template.

- The First Letters of All Headings in the article should be capitalized and written with bold emphasis.
- The title of the article should be centered and other headings should be aligned on both sides.
- All text should be written with 1.5 line spacing and 6pt margins.
- The text of the article should be written in Times New Roman font and 11-pt font, and footnotes should be written in 9-pt font.
- In both citations and bibliography, authors should follow the revised version of The Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition in Marmara University Journal of Theology Faculty of Theology Reference Guide. For ease in writing footnotes, citations and bibliographies, one of the citation programs can be used. Regarding the Turkish spelling of Arabic expressions, the spelling principles adopted by the TDV Islamic Encyclopedia (DİA) are applied.
- Ethical declaration is required all researches.
- Ethics committee approval information is required for field researches
- Manuscripts should not exceed 9000 words (excluding Abstract, Turkish Abstract, and Bibliography) during the submission. Manuscripts that exceed 9000 but do not reach 10.000 words at the time of submission may be published according to the decision of the editorial board. After revisions, these maximum word counts can be exceeded by a maximum of 1000 words.
- Book reviews, conference papers and etc. should not exceed 3000 words. For such papers, a 100-150 word abstracts in Turkish and English, and 3 keywords for each language should be written.

English Title
Abstract
It should be between 250-350 words.
It should be written in Times New Roman font, 10 pt size, aligned on both sides, single-spaced and without recess.
The content of the Abstract and Öz sections of the article should include the following:
-Presenting the general situation regarding the subject of the study
- Identification of the study problem
- Clear articulation of the purpose of the study
- Current status in the literature and contributions of the study to the literature
- Methodology of the study
- Results achieved (in brief)

Keywords
It should be written in Times New Roman font in 10-pt size, aligned on both sides, single-spaced and without recess. At least 5 and at most 8 keywords should be written. Concepts that accurately reflect the content of the article should be preferred. If the main subject of the study is a person or a work, the names of the work and the author must be included in the keywords. The first letter of each keyword should be capitalized and a comma should be placed after each word.

Turkish Title
Öz/Abstract in Turkish
It should be between 600-750 words.
It should be written in Times New Roman font, 10 pt size, aligned on both sides, single-spaced and without recess.
The points mentioned above for the content of the Abstract should also be applied to the Öz.

Anahtar Kelimeler/Keywords in Turkish
It should be written in Times New Roman font in 10-pt size, aligned on both sides, single-spaced and without recess. At least 5 and at most 8 keywords should be written. Concepts that accurately reflect the content of the article should be preferred. If the main subject of the study is a person or a work, the names of the work and the author must be included in the keywords. The first letter of each keyword should be capitalized and a comma should be placed after each word.
Note: For articles in languages other than Turkish and English, three abstracts should be submitted in total: An abstract of 250-350 words in the language in which the manuscript is written, an abstract of 600-750 words in Turkish, and an abstract of 600-750 words in English.

Notes on Manuscript Structure
The manuscripts must include introduction, method, literature review, and conclusion sections.
In introduction, the general situation about the research topic/problem addressed in the manuscript should be explained. Secondly, the research topic/problem and research question of the manuscript and its importance should be clarified and explained. This should be followed by a literature review on how or from which perspectives the topic/problem addressed in the article has been examined in the literature. Here, it is essential to answer questions such as: What other studies that are directly or closely related to the topic/problem of the manuscript have commented on the subject; What conclusions have they reached; What are the similarities and differences between the article and other studies; How the study will contribute to the literature compared to other studies. Literature review can also be presented as a separate section.
An in-depth literature review should be presented on how/from which perspectives the topic/problem addressed in the article has been examined in the literature. Here, it is essential to answer questions such as: What other studies that are directly or closely related to the topic/problem of the article have commented on the subject; What conclusions have they reached; What are the similarities and differences between the article and other studies; How the study will contribute to the literature compared to other studies.
In method section, the method(s) and technique(s), materials, theoretical framework and etc. used to conduct the research are need to be explained. Especially for articles based on fieldwork, the data collection methods and techniques, data collection tools, and sampling methods that used should be explained in detail and with reference to relevant literature. Besides, the stages of the data collection process and the date range in which it was carried out, the ethics committee permission given for the research (the issuing institution and the date of issuance) should also be presented separately.
In the conclusion section, the results of the study and the proposed solutions should be expressed clearly and concisely. In addition, recommendations for future research on the research topic/problem can be given. The conclusion should not be a summary of the study.

Notes on Headings
Headings, including the title of the article, should be aligned in the center with 1.5 line spacing, 0 pt from the top, 6 pt from the bottom and without recesses. All headings and the title of the article should be written in Times New Roman font in 11 pt size.
The headings in the manuscripts should be as short as possible and should reflect the subject well and accurately. Double quotation marks (“-”) or slash marks (/) should be avoided as much as possible. A colon (:) can be used if deemed necessary.
Headings (except Abstract, Öz, Introduction, Conclusion and References) should be written in decimal system order. Main section headings should be written as “1., 2., 3., ...”; subheadings under the main sections should be written as “1.1., 1.2., 1.3. ...”. A space should be left between the heading number and the first letter of the heading.
Only the first letters of the words in the titles should be capitalized and written with bold emphasis. Italic emphasis should not be used.

Main Text
The manuscript should be in Times New Roman font and 11-pt size, aligned on both sides, and set at 1.5 line spacing. Paragraph beginnings should be 1.25 cm left intended, and spaces should be set as 0 pt above the paragraph and 6 pt below the paragraph.
Page numbers should not be added.
No footers and headers should be entered in any way.

Footnotes
Footnotes to be given in the text should be written in Times New Roman font and 11-pt size, aligned on both sides, and 1,0 line spacing. Spacing should be set to 0 pt from the above and below.

Direct quotations in the text should be indicated with double quotation marks (“...”) if the quotation is 3 lines or less in length. If the direct quotation is longer than 3 lines:
Then the quotations should be given in Times New Roman font and 10-pt size; aligned on both sides; and with 1 line spacing. The beginning of the paragraph should begin without recess, the entire quotation should be recessed 1,25 cm from left and right; spaces should be set as 0 pt above and 6 pt below.

Tables and Figures
The text in the table content should be in Times New Roman font and 10 pt size, aligned on both sides. Table and Figure captions should also be written in Times New Roman font and 10-pt size, aligned on both sides, and line spacing should be set to 1. Spacing should be set as 0 pt above and 6 pt beleow for Table and Figure captions. If Tables and/or Figures are taken from another source, the relevant source should be presented right below the table/figure.
Tables should not extend beyond the writing area (page margins should not be violated), and spacing should be set to 0 pt above and 6 pt below. Tables smaller than the page margins should be center aligned.

Abbreviations
The abbreviation should be made as specified in the TDK dictionary; if the abbreviation is not specified in the TDK dictionary, the author’s preference should be stated in the explanation section when submitting the article.

Bibliography
References should start on the next page after the Conclusion section.
References should be written in Times New Roman font, 11-pt size, aligned on both sides and single-spaced.
The recess preference for each reference should be “Special: Hanging” and the recess value should be set to 1.25 cm. Spacing for each source should be 0 pt above and 6 pt below.
If more than one work of an author is included in the bibliography, the author’s last name and first name should be given only for the first work, and then other works should be given with the “———.” sign without repeating the last name and first name. For example:

• JIST is a double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access, and multidisciplinary academic journal issued twice a year. Submitted manuscripts are first assessed by the editorial board and only those articles that passed this initial process are sent to two anonymous reviewers for evaluation and peer-reviewing. In case both of the reviews are positive a manuscript is considered for publication; if both of them are negative, the manuscript is rejected and not published. If one of the reviews is positive and the other negative, then the manuscript is sent to a third reviewer; if this third reviewer is positive the manuscript is published, and if not the manuscript is rejected. However, the editorial board of JIST has the final decision to publish a manuscript after reviewing.
• Fair Play: JIST gives unbiased consideration to all manuscripts, judging each on its own academic merits without regard to the race, religion, nationality, sex, political philosophy, seniority, or institutional affiliation of the author.
• Confidentiality: The editor and the members of the editorial board should not disclose any information about a manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, and other editorial advisers.
• Disclosure and Conflict of Interest: Unpublished material disclosed in a manuscript submitted to JIST must not be used in the research of the members of the editorial board without the consent of the author.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PEER-REVIEWERS

• Contribution to Editorial Decision: Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and may also help the authors in improving their work. JIST sends the revision requests to the authors and expects them to comply with the reviewers’ suggestions. JIST may reject an article on the ground that the revisions requested by the reviewers and the editorial board are not undertaken by the authors.
• Promptness: Normally JIST gives reviewers 15 days to review an article but this can be extended when and if necessary. Reviewers should only agree to review manuscripts for which they have the subject expertise required to carry out a proper assessment in a timely manner and should notify the editorial office of JIST immediately if they cannot fulfill this task so alternative reviewers can be assigned.
• Confidentiality: Reviewers should respect the confidentiality of peer review. They should not reveal any details of a manuscript or its review, during or after the assessment process to anyone except if authorized by the editör of JIST. Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the consent of the author.
• Standards of Objectivity: Reviewers should be objective and constructive in their review. Decisions should solely depend on academic merit and relevance to the subject and should be expressed by supporting arguments. Any personal attacks against the authors are unacceptable. Reviewers should not reject or approve an article without any necessary explanation.
• Acknowledgement of Sources: Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument has been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editors’ attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
• Disclosure and Conflict of Interest: Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. A reviewer should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF AUTHORS

• Reporting Standards: Authors should present an accurate account of the research performed, and offer an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately. The manuscript should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Dishonest, false, or incompetent statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
• Originality and Plagiarism: Authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works. The work and words of others must be appropriately cited or quoted. Plagiarism in all its forms including self-plagiarism (text-recycling) is unethical and unacceptable. If JIST identifies plagiarism in an article, it is immediately removed from the evaluation process. If identified only after publication, JIST notifies relevant authorities of the situation.
• Multiple, Redundant and Concurrent Publication: The manuscript should offer new, original insights or interpretations that have not been published before and are not under consideration for publication in another journal. Submitting an article already published in any form and submitting the same article to multiple journals are unethical and unacceptable.
• Acknowledgment of Sources: Authors must properly acknowledge the works of others. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of their work.
• Authorship: Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the article. All those who have made a significant contribution should be listed as co-authors. Others who have contributed in certain aspects should be listed in the acknowledgment section. All co-authors and responsible authorities should have approved the submitted version.
• Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Authors should declare all funding sources and any actual or potential conflicts including any financial, personal, or other relationships with other people and organizations.
• Fundamental Errors in Published Works: Authors are obliged to promptly notify the editor of JIST to retract the article or publish an appropriate erratum if they discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their published works.
